A Wuhu Bridge Wins World's Highest Bridge Award

  • Second Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Bridge

The Second Wuhu Yangtze River Highway Bridge, designed and constructed by Anhui Transportation Holding Group Co, was awarded the George S. Richardson Medal at the 35th International Bridge Conference(IBC), the world’s most prestigious bridge award.

Completed and opened on December 30, 2017, the 55.5-km-long bridge represents the pinnacle of China’s achievement in bridge engineering. It was given the Be Inspired award in 2014 when it was still under construction, in recognition of its technical innovation, applied engineering principles and the positive impact on local infrastructure. It was the first time a Chinese bridge had ever won the honor.

The bridge is a key part in the expressway network of Anhui province and a crossing-river section of the national expressway from Xuzhou, Jiangsu province to Fuzhou, Fujian province.

Established in 1988, the annual award recognizes a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering, and is reputed as the Nobel Prize in the bridge industry.

Ma’anshan Yangtze River Bridge, also built by Anhui Transportation Holding Group Co., received the medal at the 33rd International Bridge Conference.

As the pre-eminent arena for the bridge industry in North America, Europe and Asia, the IBC provides an individual medal for distinguished engineers and six project medals for the outstanding achievements in bridge engineering, including George S. Richardson Medal and Gustav Lindenthal Medal.
