The State Intellectual Property Office has accepted the first 10 applications for the protection of geographical indication (GI) products by law, including one from East China’s Anhui province.

Nanling Rice, a rice variety planted in Nanling county, was submitted by local authorities. Known for its good taste and adequate nutrition, the product is popular in the country and has been sold to many foreign countries.

China has protected geographical indications since 1996. As of now, China has protected the geographical indications for 2,359 products, which has played an important role in protecting national brands and inheriting traditional culture, China Daily said on Thursday.
